I started to write a post about the recent HIV+ diagnosis in the porn industry… I looked up points and counterpoints of people who say condoms should be mandated and others who say porn actors know their risks when they get into the industry and should be allowed to choose their risk (which, incidentally, is incredibly low, considering that the last “outbreak” of HIV+ diagnoses was in 2004. Compare that with the consequences of risk-taking activities of, you know, the rest of us). I saw porn actors being demonized and porn actor-detractors being demonized. And unfortunately, as with every conversation I’ve ever had or seen that revolves around pornography, this conversation  has degraded into two opposing, hyper-simplified poles, the undercurrent of which was “porn is bad and evil vs. porn is good and right”.

I’m too ambivalent and irritated to have this conversation again, which, yes, is a total cop-out, but I’m interested in what you young whipper-snappers have to say.  Should condoms be mandated in hetero porn (as they currently are in gay male porn?)? Or is this too “hands-on” a role for the government to play? Should porn actors be able to choose their risk? What of their non-industry partners? Is the fact that the risk is truly so low among actors enough to ward off regulation? What of other STIs? Should, perhaps, the standard 30-days-between-HIV-tests rule be made more stringent instead? Would consumers watch porn in such quantities if condoms were universal, when there’s already a dent in sales due to the ubiquity of free online amateur porn? Can we have a nuanced discussion of pornography, like ever?

The list goes on and on. My thoughts on this are complicated, and I can see the merits of all of these arguments. Anyone have anything particularly new or enlightening to add to the discussion?

I was tipped off to this awesome video project called “Immersion: Porn” on BoingBoing – Robbie Cooper pieced together interviews with people talking about their relationship to porn, intercut with videos of them masturbating to their favorite movies… but you only see them from the neck up. Kinda like the Libido DVD Orgasm! Faces of Ecstacy, except with interviews and a little more edge.

It’s incredibly personal, illuminating, and titillating. Check it out.

more about “Watch people watch porn“, posted with vodpod

Well, if you like blonds & blowjobs (and people swimming with hats on), you’ll love Car Wash.  The basic premise is that a cheerleading team (with terrible cheers!) needs to “take out” a rival team in order to secure a spot at Nationals. So they do what most people would do and hire a hit man. But first they need to come up with $5000 (really? only $5000 to take out a WHOLE cheerleading team). So they wash cars, play poker and enter a photo contest. Along the way they, of course, fuck each other, some dudes and one really cheap looking dildo. Like a lot of hetero porn, there was a snippet of gender relations that icked me out, but  for the most part it was a pretty fun romp. The sex was nothing earth-shattering, but it was enthusiastic and you get to see a little bit of a lot of stuff: group sex, strap-on sex, anal sex and some serious blowjobs. There are a couple of come shots, but nothing too extreme. Overall I thought it wasn’t a bad way to spend a rainy afternoon.

Some British lady novelists have decided to “see how the other half writes” by contributing to a collection of literary porn called In Bed With.  According to the Times Online, “They are among a group of 20 women who have anonymously contributed to a book of ‘unashamedly sexy stories’.”

Gotta love the juxtaposition of “anonymous” and “unashamed.” Regardless, however, it should make for interesting reading, and perhaps open up the doors for more self-respecting lady novelists to do the same. Maybe it’ll even give the consumptive publishing industry a little boost?

Writers and Rockstars
by Joe

joeI have to make a confession: before watching Writers & Rockstars I wasn’t that familiar with Madison Young.   I’d heard of her and knew she was part of the BDSM world, but I’d never seen any of her movies.

Writers & Rockstars showed up with the following legend written on the DVD case:

“Starring Madison Young and Daniel along with some surprise sexual appearances by hungry cunts and cocks.

After dating hundreds of musicians I’ve come to the conclusion that rockers play music the same way that they fuck. Some like to play hard and fast and some slow and soft… What kind of rocker are you? Young poetess Madison divulges her steamy sexual experiences with hot rock stars. Lots of hot boy/girl and girl/girl sex set to a killer soundtrack that will keep you hard, wet, and ready to rock.”

Okay, it’s hard to say “no” to a teaser like that.  With that in mind, I slipped Writers & Rockstars into my DVD player and off we went.

Written and directed by Madison, the movie follows her and her friends through various couplings.  The scenes are interspersed with Madison’s poetry readings, which act as a sort of internal exposition to the action we’ve just seen (or are about to see).

The music by The Casual Lust runs between emo and mall-punk.  It doesn’t distract from what’s happening on the screen and manages to set a mood, so that’s a good thing.

My favorite thing about Writers & Rockstars is that there’s no silicone or other enhancements here.   You truly get the impression that these are real people having a real good time with each other, and I find that incredibly erotic.  And when Madison gets into full “sub” mode, you can see she’s having the most fun of anyone in the cast.

There are four scenes in the movie: Madison and James Mogul; Madison and Daniel; Madison and Dia Zerva; and Dia Zerva and Dylan Ryan.  Each scene could stand on its own, yet taken together the viewer gets a more complete picture of what makes Madison tick.

The scene with James Mogul starts out innocently enough with Madison wearing cat-eye glasses and writing her poetry.  James walks in with a camcorder and before long our heroine eagerly gives him a blowjob while he tapes it.

Madison then meets one of the eponymous “rockstars,” Daniel, on the vacant stage of a nightclub.  When he shoves her up against the side of the stage and begins to take her roughly, you start to get the idea of what’s to follow.  Candle wax and belts are involved, and Madison seems to enjoy every bit of it.

We then see Madison’s encounter with a “well-schooled” woman: “I wanted her to dominate me– to consume me” as she says in her poem.   We cut to an empty bar where we meet Dia Zerva, another “rockstar.” Here, Madison is her assistant—the person in charge of tickets and T-shirts.  Dia, clad in standard studded-leather rockstar garb, looks from the stage as she tunes her guitar and smiles at Madison, and within a few minutes Dia does, in fact, dominate and “consume” Madison very enthusiastically on the bar.

Finally, Dia meets Dylan Ryan in the bathroom of the bar, and after telling Dylan what a fan she is, Dia flips from dom to sub very convincingly.   Dylan takes control of the situation and soon the pair are in complete carnal pleasure.

The entire movie is shot with hand-held cameras, but is done very well and tastefully.  This does not have the feel of some movies I’ve seen where you get the impression that the director told the cameraman to “just get in there NOW.”  The shots are all set up nicely, the lighting is flattering, and the audio is just right.

Whether or not you’re familiar with Madison Young, you may want to check out Writers and Rockstars if you’re looking for something a little edgier than the usual adult movie.

**Note: Early to Bed does not currently carry this DVD, but keep your eyes peeled for it in the future!
